Information @ a Glance

  • Ethylene glycol is a clear, colourless liquid with a syrupy consistency.

  • Butyl glycol is the butyl ether of ethylene glycol, it is commonly used as a solvent in paints and cleaning products.

  • Applications are •Solvent for dyes in textile and leather for it increases the dye stability and yields brighter colors.
    • Solvent in surface coatings such as spray lacquers, quick dry lacquers, enamels, varnishes, latex paints, thinners, varnish removers and resins
    • Butyl glycol is used as an essential component in agricultural components, herbicides and insecticides.
    • Solvent for inks.
    • Butyl glycol is an essential degreaser for industrial and household detergents.

  • Ethylene glycol is produced from ethylene, which is oxidated into epoxy ethane via activator silver salt. Epoxy ethane reacts with water to produce ethylene glycol.

  • Skeleton Symbol is HO-CH2-CH2-OH And Molecular Formula is C2H6O2

  • Ethylene glycol absorbs moisture, dissolves in water, ethanol, acetone and slightly dissolves in aether, and can reduce the freezing point of water by large extent.

  • Butyl Glycol is also a chemical intermediate and, as such, is a starting material in the production of butyl glycol acetate which is, itself, an excellent solvent.

  • Butyl Glycol is also a starting material in the production of plasticisers by the reaction of phthalic anhydride.

  • Butyl glycol is produced by reacting ethylene oxide and normal butanol (n-butanol) using a catalyst. If the ratio of ethylene oxide to n-butanol is greater than one then di- and tri- ethylene glycol monoethers are also produced.

  • World production is estimated at between 300-500 KT per annum.

  • Butyl glycol is stored and transported in carbon steel, stainless steel or teflon containers and can be moved in bulk or in drums.

  • Butyl glycol usage is dominated by the paint industry which consumes approximately 75 % of all the BG produced.

  • This is because it is a low volatility solvent and it can therefore both extend the drying times of coatings and improve their flow.

  • Other applications include use as a solvent in printing inks and textile dyes and as a component of hydraulic fluids, and also as a solvent in agricultural pesticides.

  • It is also a component of drilling and cutting oils and is a component of Corexit 9527, which is an oil spill dispersant product.

  • It is also employed in dry cleaning as a solvent for nitrocellulose, albumin, resins, oils, and grease.

  • Ethylene glycol can be made industrially by reacting water with ethylene oxide

  • Ethylene glycol is used as an antifreeze, engine coolant and in the manufacture of polyester fibres and plasticisers
