Information @ a Glance

  • Ibuprofen belongs to a class of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  • Other members of this class include aspirin, naproxen (Aleve), indomethacin (Indocin), nabumetone (Relafen) and several others.
  • These drugs are used for the management of mild to moderate pain, fever, and inflammation. Pain, fever, and inflammation are promoted by the release in the body of chemicals called prostaglandins.
  • Ibuprofen blocks the enzyme that makes prostaglandins (cyclooxygenase), resulting in lower levels of prostaglandins. As a consequence, inflammation, pain and fever are reduced. The FDA approved ibuprofen in 1974.

Mechanism of action

  • Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are thought to work by inhibiting the action of certain hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.
  • These hormones are called prostaglandins. By blocking the effects of prostaglandins, ibuprofen can help reduce fever and pain related to a number of conditions.
  • This includes pain and joint swelling associated with different forms of arthritis and other conditions; and pain related to inflammation or bone, muscle, or tendon injury.

  • DRL has launched Ibuprofen in the US generics market under its brand name.
  • The company has also commenced shipment of prescription Ibuprofen tablets 400 mg, 600 mg and 800 mg to the US "Direct marketing of Ibuprofen is the first step in building our commercial organization in the US market.
  • It exemplifies the fact that we can manage our vertically integrated supply chain," said Mark Hartman, executive VP, generics, Dr Reddy's.
  • The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) today hiked the prices of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen and two derivatives of topical steroid (bulk drug) betamethasone.
  • Price of ibuprofen has been increased from Rs 346/kg to Rs 391/kg, based on a detailed cost-price study in respect of main producers Dr Reddy's Lab and Shasun Chemicals, said an NPPA statement here.
