General
Information
- Polyvinylidene
fluoride, or PVDF is a highly non-reactive and pure thermoplastic
fluoropolymer.
- PVDF is a specialty
plastic material in the fluoropolymer family; it is used generally
in applications requiring the highest purity, strength, and
resistance to solvents, acids, bases and heat and low smoke
generation during a fire event.
- PVDF is resistant to
solvents and, therefore, these membranes can be easily stripped and
reused to look at other proteins, making it very convenient.
- In medical and
biological imaging above 15MHz, PVDF and its copolymers have proven
extremely useful.
Uses
- PVDF membranes are
used for western blots for immobilization of proteins, due to
its non-specific affinity for amino acids.
- PVDF is commonly
used as insulation on some kinds of electrical wires, because of
its combination of flexibility, low weight, low thermal
conductivity, high chemical corrosion resistance, and heat
resistance.
- The piezoelectric
properties of PVDF are used to advantage to manufacture tactile
sensor arrays, inexpensive strain gauges and lightweight audio
transducers.
- In the biomedical
sciences PVDF is used in immunoblotting as an artificial
membrane, usually with 0.22 or 0.45 micrometres pore sizes, on
which proteins are transferred using electricity.
- PVDF is used for
specialty monofilament fishing lines, sold as fluorocarbon
replacements for nylon monofilament.
Report
- In processing
of PVDF around 13 processors namely five in the moulding
sector, eight in the wire and cable sector have come up in
the country who are importing the basic resin and processing
with indigenous equipment.
- The market has
picked up for PVDF as entrepreneurs as well as the users are
becoming aware of this product because of its easy
processability and its wide range of applications.
- PVDF has
entered India as finished components like pipes, pipe
fittings, valves etc. for the Chloralkali industries where
it is best suited for nascent Chlorine.
- The Kynar 500®
PVDF resin is made using a new fluorosurfactantfree (FSF)
process.
- Arkema Inc.
has developed a multilayer blown film process using its
Kynar PVDF films to deliver cost-effective films as per
market needs.
