Information @ a Glance

  • Rust Converter is a synthetic polymeric formula that converts existing rust into a moisture free, black protective coating. Not only does it eliminate existing rust, but it seals out moisture to prevent the possibility of future rust formation and corrosion.
  • Commercial rust Converters are a water-based primer, contains two active ingredients: Tannic acid and an organic polymer. Tannic acid, reacts with iron oxides (rust) and chemically converts it to iron tannate, a dark-colored stable material. The  second active ingredient, usually 2-Butoxyethanol, is an organic polymer that provides a protective primer layer.
  • Rust Converter can be used on any rusty iron or steel object. It can be used on vehicles, trailers, fences & gates, iron railings and staircases, sheet metal, cast iron, outsides of tanks, lawn equipment, mower decks, farm equipment, tractors to name just a few. It will not work on aluminum, copper, stainless steel or galvanized metal.
  • The chemical mode of action of rust converters is the conversion of porous and loose iron compounds to sparingly soluble adherent compounds. The most frequently used formulations are based on phosphoric acid which cause the rust to be converted to firmly adhering iron phosphate layers.
  • Apply rust converter with a brush or a roller.
  • Larger surfaces are much easier to roll and brushes work well on smaller surfaces.
  • The rust converter will dry in 20 minutes however it takes 24 to cure. Applica- tion of a second coating will ensure proper rust conversion. If applying an oil-based top coat, wait 48 hours after the last coat to ensure it has proper time to cure.
  • The process for the manufacture of rust converter consists of preparing a composition by mixing phosphoric acid, manganese carbonate and acetic acid and then a metal powder is added in suitable proportions to the above composition. The mixture is allowed to react for 30 minutes.
  • The composition should be prepared just before its application. When applied on rusted surface it will convert rust into a black hard, protective coating in a period of two hours.
  • Rust Converter is not yet possible to find in the market a really satisfactory product, since reported results on the efficient protection are highly controversial. Since 1997, the research group has been working with different formulations with the purpose to find an adequate product.
