Information @ a Glance

  • Drugs commonly referred to as "steroids" are classified as anabolic (or anabolic-androgenic) and corticosteroids.

  • Corticosteroids, such as cortisone, are drugs that doctors typically prescribe to help control inflammation in the body.

  • They're often used to help control conditions like asthma and lupus.

  • They're not the same as the anabolic steroids that receive so much media attention for their use by some athletes and bodybuilders.

  • Steroids are a class of naturally occurring or synthetic compounds that can serve as “sex hormones, adrenal cortical hormones, bile acids, sterols, anabolic agents, and oral contraceptives”

  • Anabolic steroids usually caused azoospermia.

  • Azoospermia is a medical condition of a male characterized by not having a measurable amount of sperm.

  • This condition is usually reversible in about 80% of men upon discontinuing use of anabolic steroids.

  • The remaining 20% usually remains permanently azoospermic.

  • Bodybuilders will usually take much longer to recover.

  • The longer you stayed on the drug, the harder it is to reverse the effects

  • Most anabolic steroids are synthetic substances similar to the male sex hormone testosterone.

  • They are taken orally or are injected.

  • Some people, especially athletes, abuse anabolic steroids to build muscle and enhance performance.

  • Abuse of anabolic steroids can lead to serious health problems, some of which are irreversible

  • Taking steroids for these purposes is illegal and may be dangerous.

  • Such as testosterone deficiency, certain kinds of anemia, some kinds of breast cancer, calcium deficiency, muscle-wasting conditions

  • Abuse occurs when someone uses the steroids without a medical prescription or takes steroids improperly (e.g., taking excessive doses or taking them too frequently).

  • Steroids constitute an important class of hormones.

  • Hormones are chemical compounds that are produced by specialized cells in the body and are released into the circulatory system.

  • When these compounds reach their target cells, they interact with hormone receptor proteins and   elicit specific physiological responses.

  • In the case of steroid hormones, the physiological response is achieved by regulating the expression of specific genes
