  • Calcium silicate (often referred to by its shortened trade name Cal-Sil or Calsil) is the chemical compound Ca2SiO4, also known as calcium orthosilicate and sometimes formulated 2CaO.SiO2. It is one of group of compounds obtained by reacting calcium oxide and silica in various ratios.
  • A variety of low-density calcium silicate-based building material products have been developed for high-temperature insulation and fire resistive material (FRM) applications.
  • Calcium silicate is commonly used as a safe alternative to asbestos for high temperature insulation materials. One of the most successful materials in fire proofing in Europe is calcium silicate where North Americans use spray fireproofing plasters, Europeans are more likely to use cladding made of calcium silicate.
  • When sodium silicate is applied as a sealant to cured concrete or the shells of fresh eggs, it chemically reacts with calcium hydroxide or carbonate to form calcium silicate hydrate, sealing pores with a relatively impermeable material. Under designed application temperature, calcium silicate boards do not shrink, deform or disintegrate.
  • The thermal insulation performance is maintained throughout life span. Calcium silicate is non corrosive and non toxic material. It is odorless. It presents no harm to the environment or human health.
  • Raw materials required to produce calcium silicate are lime, hydrochloric acid and sodium silicate. Except lime the other raw materials have to be imported. Utilities required for manufacturing calcium silicate includes water, electricity and steam.
  • Burnt lime is treated with hydrochloric acid to produce calcium chloride. The addition of acid should be so calculated and adjusted that almost a neutral solution is obtained. The clear solution of calcium chloride is decanted from the top. A portion of calcium chloride is taken in evaporators and crystallized in suitable crystallizers. The remaining part of calcium chloride solution is then treated with a clear sodium silicate, when calcium silicate is precipitated out. The precipitate is centrifuged, washed, dried and packed in suitable containers.
  • The washed out solution of Calcium silicate production can cause to contaminate surface and ground waters, and land. To make the manufacturing process environment friendly it is necessary to have a waste disposal and treatment basin. 
  • The present demand for the proposed product is estimated at 57 tonnes per annum. The demand is expected to reach at 147.8 tonnes by the year 2018. The future demand for calcium silicate is a function of growth of the end-user industries. The market oriented economic policy is expected to hasten the rate of investment in different economic sectors of the country including the manufacturing sector.
