- Veterinary care
is usually led by a veterinary physician (usually called a vet,
veterinary surgeon or veterinarian). This role is the equivalent of
a doctor in human medicine, and usually involves post-graduate study
and qualification.
- A veterinary
physician, colloquially called a vet, shortened from veterinarian or
veterinary surgeon , is a professional who treats disease, disorder
and injury in animals.
- Modem veterinary
clinics which treat cattle mainly, may be divided into three types.
Firstly, the veterinarian who has the basement of his house
converted into an office, dispensary and a small surgery; secondly,
the small clinic, office and
dispensary which is combined with the garage and attached to the
house; and
thirdly, the clinic vhich is a separate unit built to accommodate
the veterinary
needs of a mixed farming area.
- As per live stock survey 2004-05, a large number of animals i.e 25%
of the
total population gets diseases due to their exposure to pollution
and
unhygienic conditions of their sheds environment and only 29% of the
total
animals requiring treatment are being treated in Punjab due to lack
of
education, motivation and also due to the lack of vet medical
facilities.
- Plans for these clinics vary and are mainly designed by the
practitioners to
specifications which they feel will meet the specific needs of the
area they serve.
The basic plans include, waiting room, dispensary, private office,
drug storage
room, large animal treatment and operating room, single stalls or
box stalls,
necropsy room, kennel room, also examination room and surgery for
small animals.
- Keeping companion animals healthy provides
“social capital” to a community. Dogs provide companionship to both
children
and the elderly, they guide the blind, and they are associated with
reduced
stress and better human health. Cats are now considered America’s
most
popular pet.
