  • Captan is the name of a general use pesticide (GUP) that belongs to the phthalimide class of fungicides. Though it can be applied on its own, Captan is often added as a component of other pesticide mixtures. It is used to control diseases on a number of fruits and vegetables as well as ornamental plants.
  • It also improves the outward appearance of many fruits, making them brighter and healthier-looking.
  • Captan is used on a variety of agricultural and greenhouse food/feed crops, indoor non-food uses, seed treatments, and ornamental plant sites.
  • Captan is formulated as an emulsifiable concentrate, flowable concentrate, ready-to-use liquid, liquid soluble concentrate, solid, water dispersible granules, wettable powder, and dust.
  • Captan blocks the ability of fungus to produce energy Captan applied to the skin of rabbits and guinea pigs causes moderate to no irritation to their skin and was low in toxicity Captan is low in toxicity if breathed in by rats or mice.
  • Captan is highly toxic to the eyes, and permanently damages the eyes of rabbits.
  • Cattle and sheep are particularly sensitive to captan if they eat large amounts.
  • Some signs of captan poisoning include hypothermia, depression, diarrhea, weight loss, loss of appetite, and increased thirst.
  • Pregnant rabbits fed large amounts of captan sometimes have spontaneous abortions and deformed offspring.
  • Although captan was mutagenic in some laboratory tests on isolated tissue cultures, the majority of evidence indicates that captan is nonmutagenic.
  • Captan is practically nontoxic to birds. The LD50 is greater than 5000 mg/kg in mallard ducks and pheasants. The LD50 is 2000 to 4000 mg/kg in bobwhite quail.
  • High doses administered for 90 days to chickens caused an 80% reduction in the number of eggs produced, but had no effect on the fertility or hatchability of the eggs produced .
  • Captan has a low persistence in soil, with a half-life of 1 to 10 days in most soil environments. Captan was not detected in field studies of its mobility at application rates of up to 42 kg active ingredient per hectare.
