General

  • Barium sulfate is a white crystalline solid with the chemical formula BaSO4.
  • Barium Sulphate is poorly soluble in water and other traditional solvents but is soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid.
  • The mineral barite is composed largely of barium sulfate and is a common ore of barium.
  • Barium sulfate is used to help doctors examine the oesophagus , stomach, and intestine using x-rays or computed tomography.
     

Process

  • Separation of barium sulphate from water solution is a typical mass crystallization process preceded by a strictly integrated chemical reaction of sparingly soluble salt precipitation.
  • Barium sulphate nanoparticles can be prepared by use of tetradecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid and stearic acid as modifier.
  • To prepare a small quantity of solid barium sulfate, use exact quantities of barium chloride and ammonium sulfate so that there is no excess of  either reagent in the remaining solution.

Application

  • Barium sulfate is frequently used clinically as a radiocontrast agent for X-ray imaging and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Barium sulfate is used as a filler in plastics and as a component of oil well drilling fluid to increase the density.
  • In photography it is used as a coating for certain photographic papers.
  • It is used in brake linings, anacoustic foams and powder coatings.
  • Barium sulfate is also used during the procedure of the soil pH test.

  • Aspiration of barium sulphate is not expected to cause severe lung injury due to its relatively non-irritant matter.
  • On the other hand, acute inflammation or even death attributed either to high or low density preparations of barium sulphate.
  • SEM micrographs and scintillation counters were used to measure the barium particle sizes.
  • Sun and Sköld created barium sulphate (BaSO4) particles by precipitation and used light scattering measurements to determine its turbidity.
