General
- Sodium
dichromate is a very strong oxidizing agent; it attacks almost all
oxidizable materials including finely divided metals, often
violently and with fire and/or explosive results. In the presence of
acetic acid, the reaction is sometimes delayed for a time, and when
it does take place, the reaction can be uncontrollable.
Manufacturing
Process
- The process of
sodium dichromate production by roasted chromite with lime and
leaching with sodium bicarbonate solution under the pressure of
carbon dioxide was a cleaner process. The conversion rate attained
82.5% under the conditions, CaO/Cr2O3 = 2, 7000C, 3 hours.
Market
- Leather
tanning consumption of sodium bichromate is 12 percent of the total
demand. U.S. production of tanned hides reached a low in 1989 but
has recovered by almost doubling since then. The fastest-growing and
potentially largest markets for leather in the U.S. are those for
auto and furniture upholstery.
- Consumption of
chromium chemicals has been in decline since peaking at 163 thousand
tons in 1974. This is primarily due to environmental and health
concerns. The trend has apparently now ceased and the current
consumption level represents difficult-to-substitute applications of
chrome chemicals. Over the next four years, U.S. sodium bichromate
consumption is anticipated to grow modestly, at 0.5 percent
annually.
Application
- Sodium
dichromate, converted from sodium chromate, is the primary feedstock
for the production of chromium- containing chemicals and pigments.
Chromium-containing chemicals (e.g., chromic acid, basic chromium
sulfate, tanning compounds) are used in chromium plating, etching,
leather tanning, water treatment, and as catalysts. Other uses of
chromium-containing chemicals are in drilling operations to provide
drilling mud fluidity and in wood preservative processes to bind
copper and arsenic to wood.
-
Some applications of sodium bichromate are : Pigment industry; Protection of metals
against corrosion; Leather, textile and
dye stuff industries; Organic syntheses; Timber protection; Manufacture of most
chromium derivatives.
