History and Medicinal use of Ashwaganda Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), also known as Indian ginseng, Winter cherry, Ajagandha, Kanaje Hindi and Samm Al Ferakh, is a plant in Solanaceae or nightshade family.In Ayurveda, the fresh roots are sometimes boiled in milk, prior to drying, in order to leach out undesirable constituents. The berries are used as a substitute for rennet, to coagulate milk in cheese making.

Physical Characteristics, Habitat and Uses The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil. The fruit is rich in saponins and can be used as a soap substitute.The leaves are an insect repellent.
Cultivation and Technology
Cultivation Arrangement for Ashwaganda Land is ploughed 3-4 times and planked twice to make the tilth fine and weed free. After leveling it is divided into beds of suitable size preferably 6 m x 4 m. having proper irrigation channels. Sowing is done by broadcast or line sowing method, in the field having sufficient moisture. Ashwagandha is a rainfed crop and requires little irrigation after the crop get established. However, additional irrigation helps in better root growth. Application of chemical fertilizers is not recommended as its use invariably leads to a much branched and fibrous roots which are not good for commercial point of view.
Cultivation Process of Ashwaganda Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), also known as Indian ginseng, is an important ancient plant, the roots of which have been employed in Indian traditional systems of medicine, Ayurveda and Unani. Ashwagandha grows well in sandy loam or light red soil having pH 7.5 to 8.0 with good drainage.  Black soils or such heavy soils are suitable for cultivation.Seed should be treated with thirum or dithane M45 (Inofil M45) at the rate of 3 g/kg seed before sowing to protect the seedlings from the seed borne diseases. Excessive rainfall or water is harmful for this crop.

 Seed Requirement for Ashwaganda

Seeds are sown on raised nursery beds, prepared by thoroughly mixing farmyard manure and sand.Before sowing, the seeds must be treated with thirum or dithane M45 at the rate of 3 gm for every kilo of seed to control wilt and seed borne diseases.A nutrient dose of 10-20 tonnes of farmyard manure, 15 kg of urea and 15 kg of phosphorus are applied to the field and ploughed into furrows.
