General Information

  • Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a substitute for gasoline (petrol) or diesel fuel.

  • CNG can be used in Otto-cycle (gasoline) and modified Diesel cycle engines.

  • CNG cylinders can be made of steel, aluminium, or plastic.
  • Lightweight composite (fibre-wrapped plastic) cylinders are especially beneficial for vehicular use because they offer significant weight reductions when compared with earlier generation steel and aluminium cylinders, which leads to lower fuel consumption.

Gas Manufacturing Process and Fuel Filling

  • Raw natural gas is composed of several gases. The main component is methane. Other components include ethane, propane, butane, and many other combustible hydrocarbons. Raw natural gas may also contain water vapor, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and helium.
  • During processing, many of these components may be removed. Some—such as ethane, propane, butane, hydrogen sulfide, and helium—may be partially or completely removed to be processed and sold as separate commodities. Other components—such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen—may be removed to improve the quality of the natural gas or to make it easier to move the gas over great distances through pipelines.
  • The methods used to extract, process, transport, store, and distribute natural gas depend on the location and composition of the raw gas and the location and application of the gas by the end users.

  • The demand for CNG vehicles is expected to grow given the firm oil prices, lower running cost and rising environmental concerns.

  • Globally, an estimated 6 million vehicles run on natural gas which is expected to grow to 50 million by 2020. The major export markets are Argentina, Brazil Pakistan, Iran and China. India could account for around 15% of the global natural gas market.

  • Demand for CNG cylinders has been growing at over 40%. There is a huge mismatch in the demand-supply of CNG cylinders, which augurs well for the existing players.
