Information @ a Glance

General

  • The contact lens is a device worn in the eye to correct vision, although some people wear colored contact lens to enhance or change their eye color. The thin plastic lens floats on a film of tears directly over the cornea

Technology

  • Next-generation silicone hydrogel materials   are practice-building tools that offer existing patients a value-based upgrade  performance product. They are based on the experiences of three eyecare professionals
who worked with the Acuvue Oasys lens in clinical trials.
  • In the early days of contact lens manufacturing PMMA lenses were produced with equipment of limited accuracy and polishing was used to give the lens its final surface and geometric quality. One of the important developments in lens manufacture was the introduction of high precision lathes
    in the early 1990s

Process

  • The raw material for contact lenses is a plastic polymer. (A polymer is a blend of materials created by linking the molecules of different chemical substances.) Hard contact lenses are made of some variant of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Soft contact lenses are made of a polymer such as poly hydroxyethyl methacrylate (pHEMA) that has hydrophilic qualities, that is, it can soak up water and still retain its shape and optic functions.
  • Most contact lenses are mass produced. Spin-cast lenses - A spin cast lens is a soft contact lens manufactured by whirling liquid plastic in a revolving mold at high speed, Lathe cut - A lathe cut contact lens is cut and ground on a lathe , Molded , Hybrids .

Market

  • It has been estimated that about 125 million people use contact lenses worldwide (2%), including 28 to 38 million in the United States and 13 million in Japan . The types of lenses used and prescribed vary markedly between countries, with rigid lenses accounting for over 20% of currently-prescribed lenses in Japan, Netherlands and Germany but less than 5% in Scandinavia.
  • The contact lens industry has seen an explosion in sales and growth over the last decade. The colored contact lens market is leaping forward and grabbing more and more of the entire contact lens market. The non-prescription colored contact lens market is gaining size every year.
