General

A herbicide is used to kill unwanted plants. Selective herbicides kill specific targets while leaving the desired crop relatively unharmed. Some of these act by interfering with the growth of the weed and are often based on plant hormones. Herbicides used to clear waste ground are nonselective and kill all plant material with which they come into contact.

The IUPAC for Metamitron is 4-amino-4,5-dihydro-3-methyl-6-phenyl-1,2,4-triazin-5-one or 4-amino-3-methyl- 6-phenyl-1 ,2,4- triazin- 5(4H)-one. the Formula is C10H10N4O.

Technology

Solid-phase ex traction simplifies the sample pre treatment step , but there is still some evaporation and transfer of the extract. The on-line SPE-LC-UV diode array detection (UV-DAD) system is being used routinely in many laboratories and an increasing number of applications is currently described using on-line SPE-LC  coupled to various interfaces and MS detection.

A company in Europe has announced a validated liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) method for detecting selected phenyl urea and triazine herbicides in drinking water and groundwater. Using this method, chemists from Laboratories in Huntingdon, UK, detected 16 herbicides at very low limits, considerably below 0.1mg/l - the prescribed concentration for individual pesticides specified by the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations in the UK. Extensively used as weed control agents, the phenyl urea and triazine herbicides are detected in drinking water and other environmental samples.

Bioremediation is a more cost effective method of remediation as compared to incineration or physical and chemical remediation methods. This technology has the potential to be one of the most cost effective technologies for dealing with environmental remediation problems.

Market Report

There are many agrochemical generic manufacturing companies around the world varying in size and market presence. In order for these companies to grow and take advantage of the increasing market share taken by generics it is necessary to invest larger sums of money in product registrations or find partners with which to share the costs. To date, only a few Indian and Chinese companies have managed to develop European/USA registrations and usually this has been in collaboration with local marketing companies.

The agrochemical market has reached a mature phase compared with the pharmaceutical sector, major new innovations are more likely to come from GM crops rather than from New Chemical Entities (NCE).
