  • Racemic methionine can be synthesized from diethyl sodium phthalimidomalonate, (C6H4(CO)2NC(CO2Et)2), by alkylation with chloroethylmethylsulfide, ClCH2CH2SCH3 followed by hydrolysis and decarboxylation.
