General

  • Nickel is a metallic chemical element with the symbol Ni and atomic number 28.
  • Nickel is a silvery-white metal that takes on a high polish. It belongs to the transition metals, and is hard and ductile.
  • Nickel is used in many industrial and consumer products, including stainless steel, magnets, coinage, and special alloys. It is also used for plating and as a green tint in glass.
  • Nickel is magnetic, and is very often accompanied by cobalt, both being found in meteoric iron.

Application

  • Nickel based super alloys are used within the industrial gas turbine (IGT) engine manufacturing industry, specifically to meet the needs of the hot gas path components and the applications have been heat treated to improve resistance to creep.

  • The application of High purity nickels are used in electronic and aerospace applications, chemical and food processing equipment, for anodes and cathodes, caustics evaporators and heat shields.
  • The application of zinc based coatings to protect ferrous substrates from the effects of corrosion are well established in the surface coatings industry.
  • The autocatalytic electroless nickel-phosphorous deposits have wide range of commercial applications because of their wear and corrosion resistance, adaptability for uniform coating on complex shapes.

Technology

  • The technique for determining nickel in serum by flameless atomic absorption, with use of dimethyiglyoxime.The procedure permits a greater  number of analyses per technicianat a relatively low cost, yet provides acceptable accuracy and reliability.
  • In the ever reducing gate dimension and junction depths, nickel Silicide has become one of the promising candidates for silicides applications in submicron CMOS devices.

Process

  • CIS countries are the largest producers of mined nickel and contribute to about 19.77% of the world production.
    the growth of low nickel austenitic stainless steels (200 series) which are replacing the 18%Cr-8%Ni steels and the stainless steel scrap availability that could  bring a balance in the nickel market.
  • Nickel consumption is derived from the production growth of austenitic stainless steel in the world as this segment consumes 68% of the nickel  produced.
