General
- Nitrogen is a
chemical element which has the symbol N and atomic number 7. Elemental
nitrogen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and mostly inert diatomic
gas at standard conditions. Nitrogen is a constituent element of all
living tissues and amino acids. Many industrially important compounds,
such as ammonia, nitric acid, and cyanides, contain nitrogen.
- Liquid nitrogen is
inert, colorless, odorless, non-corrosive, nonflammable, and extremely
cold. Nitrogen makes up the major portion of the atmosphere (78.03% by
volume, 75.5% by weight). Nitrogen is inert and will not support
combustion; however, it is not life supporting. The term nitrogen oxide
is a general term and can be used to refer to any of these oxides
(oxygen compounds) of nitrogen, or to a mixture of them
Processing
- The nitrogen
cycle of an aquarium is a chain reaction in nature resulting in the
birth of various types of nitrifying bacteria, each with their own
job to do. Each new bacteria born consumes the previous one, and in
turn gives birth to the next bacteria. In general the nitrogen
cycling process usually takes about 30 days, but there is no exact
time frame for this process to complete its task, as each aquarium
is different.
- Nitrogen fixation
is limited to prokaryotes. Some eubacteria and a few archebacteria
can fix nitrogen - but no eukaryotic cells can do this. Some
N-fixing bacteria are free-living whereas other form symbiotic
associations with plants. Rhizobium is also found free in the soil
but only fixes N2 when inside the root nodules of its host plant, in
a strictly controlled microaerophilic environment.
Application
& Technology
- Nitrogen is used
to treat the melt in the manufacture of steel and other metals and
as a shield gas in the heat treatment of iron, steel and other
metals. It is also used as a process gas, together with other gases
for reduction of carbonization and nitriding. Liquid nitrogen is
used to cool concrete, which leads to better cured properties.
- Gaseous nitrogen
has a wide variety of industrial applications, with special
relevance to the chemical, alimentary, electrical and metallurgical
industries. Nitrogen is still used as non-reactive gas in production
of rubbers or expanded plastics, also with application in wind
tunnels or as pressurizing liquid of reactor propellers.
- The special
advantage of Nitrogen Technology is that there is no need for
complicated vacuum locks. A high quality, low-oxygen soldering
atmosphere is obtained in an extremely short period of time – for
perfect soldering results and outstanding soldering quality. The
Clean Coal Technology will mitigate the economic and environmental
impediments that limit the full utilization of coal as a continuing
viable energy resource.
Market
- An accidental
explosion completely destroying the nitrogen plant of Grande
Paroisse in Toulouse, France, and leading to the deaths of about
thirty persons, raised fresh safety and security concerns in the
fertilizer industry worldwide especially about the safe handling of
ammonium nitrate. A viable nitrogen credit market will readily
demonstrate the economic value of land for purposes other than corn
production, housing, or commercial development.
- The nitrogen
market will create a new land-economics paradigm. It will create new
financial opportunities for landowners, particularly farmers, and
lessen the agricultural community’s dependence on government
subsidies, while bringing an equitable resolution to the problem of
non-point source pollution.
