  • The process developed in the U K to produce magnesium hydroxide from seawater is described, together with the heat treatment that the hydroxide receives to produce the active oxide.

  • Worldwide, about 6 million tons of MgO are produced from sea water each year, with US consumption around 730 thousand tons.

  • MgO usage varies widely. Higher-purity products produced from seawater/brine tend to be used for refractory or industrial uses.

  • The process of isothermally sintering magnesium oxide obtained from seawater by substoichiometric (where precipitation of
    magnesium hydroxide took place with 80 % of the stoichiometric quantity of dolomite lime) and by overstoichiometric
    precipitation (which took place with 120 % of the stoichiometric quantity of dolomite lime).

  • Magnesium oxide obtained from seawater2-9 is a high-quality refractory material, and its advantages lie not only in the huge
    reserves of seawater10 (1 m3 contains 0.945 kg of magnesium), but in the higher purity of the sintered magnesium oxide (> 98 % MgO).

  • The titration method is used to monitor the carbonate content of sea water, fresh water and lime, in order to ensure that calcium carbonate is not precipitated out with magnesium hydroxide.

  • The operating conditions that might be used for theproduction of good quality caustic magnesia, i.e. caustic MgO with a low B2O3 content has been determined.

  • The technology of obtaining magnesium oxide from sea water which a plant of a company has been using for many years has been mastered.

  • The lime technology of obtaining magnesium oxide from sea water and salt lake natural brine has been finished rather well and become widespread not only in the USA, but also in Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Mexico etc.
