  • A shock absorber in common parlance (or damper in technical use) is a mechanical device designed to smooth out or dampen a sudden shock impulse and dissipate kinetic energy.

  • The technology for conventional i.e. non-pressurised twin tube hydraulic shock absorbers is well established and no further imports seem to be necessary. Presently, the demand of gas filled and variable damping co-efficient shock absorbers are very small. Technology for both type will have to be imported, when their production is initiated in the country.

Designing Process

  • Shock absorbers must absorb or dissipate energy. One design consideration, when designing or choosing a shock absorber is where that energy will go. In most dashpots, energy is converted to heat inside the viscous fluid.
  • Shock absorbers work on the principle of fluid displacement on both the compression and extension cycle.
  • The basic function of the shock absorber is to absorb and dissipate the impact kinetic energy to the extent that accelerations imposed upon the airframe are reduced to a tolerable level.


  • Shock absorbers are an important part of automobile and motorcycle suspensions, aircraft landing gear, and the supports for many industrial machines.
  • The shock absorbers that are commonly used today are Hydraulic telescopic dampers, Non-pressurized twin tube telescopic hydraulic dampers, gas charged shock absorbers, mono-tube shock absorbers twin tube pressurized shock absorbers, spring assisted dampers etc.


  • Demand for shock absorbers in India, at present, is primarily limited to automobile sector only. Their demand arises from two segments namely, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of vehicles, and Replacement market.
  • Demand from OEM's depends on the past/current/envisaged production of vehicles. Demand arising from the replacement market, on the other hand, depends on users perception of the need, actual life obtained and other parameters.
